It's a recurring theme in all of my emails and phone calls of late: news that is just sort of news.
Today I have a fairly big piece of news, but as usual, it comes with wee caveat and perhaps an ammendment.
I quit my job. Well, I gave my notice. In North America this would mean I'd bid adieu to these fair halls in about two weeks, but here in London, at certain seniority levels, it means i'm not leaving for another three months!
You've all heard my complaints about the 5-hour commute between Oxford and London so few will wonder WHY i've made this sudden announcement. But the fact is, I do really like this job.
For example: yesterday i spent an hour chatting with the CEO of Domino's Pizza in his corner office. Today I trolled through photos of alumnus Tony Wheeler, the founder of Lonely Planet, who just made a multi-million £ donation to the School. Tonight I'll hear the chairman of
BT speak and afterwards sip some free chapagne in a regal room. There is lots to like!
But I miss having a community - one that's close to home; people that I run into when I walk down the streets of my home city; having the energy and the time in the evenings to go for a jog, grab coffee with friends or just run errands before the shops close. i miss eating dinner before 8pm. I miss going on weekday dates with Dean!
The perks are clear enough. Above all, my hope is that, once I start spending time in, and eventually working in Oxford, there will be more people to do all this stuff WITH.
but oh yah, the caveat: I'm a big softie. I hate saying no to people. So there is a chance that, from June, I may stay on at LBS 3 days/week until another opportunity presents itself.
So while I say I quit, i won't be strutting down Baker St with a box full of personal items from my desk for some time yet.
congratulate me anyway :)
